Helping slow short‑sightedness in Craigieburn children

Myopia (short‑sightedness) is appearing earlier and progressing faster in many children, increasing the lifetime risk of eye disease. At Aston Eyes, myopia control is a dedicated service focused on slowing prescription changes rather than simply updating stronger glasses each year.

How myopia is assessed

Every myopia visit includes a full vision and eye‑health check plus precise measurements of refraction and axial length (AXL). Axial length tells how long the eye has grown and is one of the best ways to track whether treatment is working. Family history, time outdoors, screen habits and school demands are also discussed so the plan fits the child’s real life.

Treatment options available

Depending on age, prescription and eye shape, treatment may include:

  • Orthokeratology (Ortho‑K) rigid lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea so vision is clear without glasses during the day.

  • Stellest and other myopia‑control spectacle lenses designed to reduce the stimulus for the eye to keep growing.

  • Low‑dose atropine eye drops used at night to help slow myopia progression in suitable children.

Often a combination of strategies and lifestyle advice gives the best outcome.

Ongoing care

Children are reviewed regularly to monitor AXL growth and prescription changes. Reports are explained clearly to parents, and the plan is adjusted as your child grows, with a long‑term focus on protecting their vision and eye health into adulthood.
